30 October 2008 - NZ Lotteries has announced a new record transfer to the NZ Lottery Grants Board of $156.8 million for the 2007/2008 financial year, $9.3 million more than last year, NZ Lotteries' Chief Executive Todd McLeay, said today.

"Sales of $778 million were up by 4.4 percent on 2006/2007, largely driven by strong Powerball sales due to three long jackpot runs.

"We began the year by celebrating our 20th birthday in August 2007 and have concluded it with excellent financial results.

"We are especially pleased to return such a large amount to New Zealand communities through lottery grants. Since NZ Lotteries began, more than $2.5 billion has been transferred to the NZ Lottery Grants Board to benefit community, sports, arts and cultural groups across the country."

"Over the year, we have revitalised Lotto and Powerball advertising, made changes to the Powerball game, completed the refurbishment of our retail network which now numbers at more than 1,000 retail stores around New Zealand, and launched our online sales website, MyLotto.

"Of these initiatives, the changes to the Powerball game have resulted in the most noticeable effect on sales. In October 2007, we increased the number of Powerball balls from eight to ten, which lengthened the odds of winning and increased the minimum First Division to $3 million and the probability of big jackpots. From when the changes took effect until the end of the financial year, there were three long jackpot runs which boosted sales, as many infrequent players are motivated to purchase tickets for big jackpots. "The year also saw the culmination of our major retail expansion and refurbishment project. Sales from our retail network remain the mainstay of our business, and our focus now is on working with our retailers to ensure our customers experience great in-store service.

"Another major milestone was reached in May when we launched our new online sales website, MyLotto. Registrations exceeded our expectations, with more than 30,000 players signed up by the end of the financial year."

Over the year, 116 players won Lotto First Division, seventeen of whom became instant millionaires, and a further four lucky players became instant millionaires when they spun and won $1 million on Lotto's Winning Wheel.

In NZ Lotteries' big jackpot games, Lotto Powerball First Division was won by six people, who all won prizes of more than $5 million. And thirteen players won Big Wednesday First Division, with eleven multi-millionaires among them.
