Wellington, Oct 14 NZPA - Auckland and Otago universities have slipped further down a list of the world's top universities, according to an annual rankings report.

While Auckland University was the leading New Zealand institute on the top 200 list, published by Britain's Times Higher Education, it slipped from 50th last year to 65th this year.

Otago University slipped 10 places to be equal 124th while the only other local university on the list -- Canterbury -- gained two places to be equal 186th.

Auckland peaked on the list at 46th in 2006, while Otago was equal 79th that year.

The top four places were dominated by famed United States and British institutions, Harvard, Yale, Cambridge and Oxford, in that order, while the California Institute of Technology came in fifth.

The leading Australian tertiary institutes were the Australian National University (16th), University of Sydney (37th) and University of Melbourne (38th).

Three other Australian universities were in the top 50, while 13 of the top 20 universities were in the United States.

The ranking criteria for the top 200 list includes research excellence, teaching quality, graduate employability and attractiveness to students.
