The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) advises that SH35 just north of Ruatoria will remain closed tonight, but hopes to restore limited vehicle access on Wednesday afternoon.

The closure was put in place late on Sunday night after ongoing bad weather caused the road to subside at Kemps Hill.

"Weather permitting, we're hoping to put in a one-lane solution tomorrow afternoon for cars and light vehicles," says regional network operations manager Gordon Hart.

"There are many locals who rely on this route to get to work or to school, and we're committed to restoring that access for them as soon as it's safe to do so."

"We will be releasing another update tomorrow, which we also hope will provide an indication of when the road will be stable enough to let heavy vehicles such as logging trucks through."

"We're very grateful to our road crews, who have worked tirelessly over the last few days to stabilise the slip,"

"We appreciate this closure is causing inconvenience to local residents and commercial transport operators, and we'd like to thank everyone for their patience."

The only available detour for motorists is via Opotiiki/SH2. The NZTA will keep the public updated of any developments as they emerge.
