This statement is released in response to media enquiries relating to the annual Labour Weekend Destiny Church Conference and the 700-man 'covenant' initiative.
Celebrating 11 years as a movement, Destiny Church hosted Manukau's Mayor Len Brown and local MP's Su'a William Sio and Peseta Sam Lotu-Inga in recognising standout achievements amongst its members in sports, business, education and social services.
The movement also celebrated the culmination of a 6-month programme aimed at helping men to become better husbands and fathers and standout contributors to local community. The initiative launched by Bishop Brian Tamaki featured over 700 men, many of whom had emerged from circumstances of severe social dysfunction, crime, alcohol/drugs and domestic violence to become functional members of society. Notably, approximately 90% of the men were of Maori or Pacific descent.
In a ceremony on Saturday evening, no less than 700 men made a covenant commitment to the vision of Destiny Church and the leadership of Bishop Tamaki to make a positive difference for whanau, children and future generations. The occasion was witnessed by several thousand people who were in attendance. The commitment was sealed by a unique covenant ring worn by the men who chose to wear it.
"Education" was also a theme highlighted by Bishop Tamaki over the weekend, with a specific emphasis on further developing the education programme of the church. Destiny Education currently caters for children from early childhood through to the second year of College commenc

I don't go to Destiny Church
I don't go to Destiny Church - but would like to offer this perspective in supporting the notion of covenant - The idea of covenant is evidenced in both the Old and New Testaments. An example in the old testament can be seen on different occassions where covenant was confirmed through circumcision with Abraham and Moses. Basically what it meant was that those who committed this act of covenant were committing their lives and the lives of their families to those respective leaders. On another occassion, we see in the life of King David covenant being confirmed by different tribes and leaders at a place called Hebron and on one instance we see in 1 Chronicles 12:18 the Chief of the Captains, Amasai, say to King David "we are yours" - which basically meant our lives are in your hands.
In the New Testament we see Jesus Christ gives a new definition of family when He says in Matthew 12:48-50 that those who are His family are those who do the will of God - and so covenant is confirmed through obedience. Also we see in the early church where individuals and families confirm covenant through laying their possessions and their lives at the feet of the Apostles (Acts 4:33-37).
So please - I ask that you not be ignorant -
To have a valid opinion about anything you must know the facts - what I have shared is not taken from a spiritual perspective but from a doctrinal and theological position. Go and search these out for yourselves.
I see Destiny Church not as a cult but as a family - a household of faith. If you take a closer look, you will see that Bishop Tamaki is attempting to propagate and produce healthy families based on principles within the Word of God
But Lsrael, pursuing the law
But Lsrael, pursuing the law of righteousness, has not attained to the law of righteousness. Why? Because they did not seek it by faith but as it were, by the works of the law... Rom9:31-32
Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. Rom 14:22
For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them" But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for "The just shall live by faith." Gal3:10-11
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love....A little leaven leavens the whole lump... Gal6:6-12
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. Eph 2:8-9
N.T supports many verses to our salvation only by Grace, but not work..
God bless you!
I really cant understand why
I really cant understand why the baby gets thrown out inspit of the bath water.
So what if there was a ring so what if they were all men so WHAT.
If this is the way that these men who have gone off the beaten track to find themselves thenn so be it!!!
It is noticeable that the
It is noticeable that the press release, while it claims to be a response to media enquiries, doesn't actually address the aspects of the covenant that the media have actually been enquiriny about. No mention here of the status of Brian Tamaki, the person who is the centre of the covenant, along with all the protocols about treating the man like a king, to the point of actually saying "Honour the King (Bishop Brian Tamaki)." This is deeply disturbing to Christians in New Zealand, yet this response is totally silent on it, hoping that it will just blow over.
I Do not doubt the good that
I Do not doubt the good that the Destiny Church has done in many lives in the community, this is a great thing. But I am disturbed that the church has put Mr Tamaki on a peter-stool and are worshiping him like some god rather that our Lord Jesus Christ. This is idolatry and nothing good will come from it.
I guess really only
I guess really only christians can see the shortfalls of Brian Tamaki - most people see men who have left gangs who arent living off benefits who went from being social outcasts to now being role models for their community. And I congratulate these men for the changes that have happened.
The problem though lies within the bible and by which christians (of which I am)live by. Isaiah 42:8 "I am the LORD; that is my name; my glory I give to no other..."
This verse probably highlights best where I personally come from. Instead of pointing people back to Christ - the AUTHOR and the SUSTAINER of our faith he points people back to himself. He is NOT above Christ - ultimately those who have put their faith and trust in God owe their allegiance to God - yes Brian may have presented to them their need for a saviour and that it should result in the change in the way they live - but NEVER EVER can he take credit for there salvation which spearheads the changes they make on the outer.
The bible says that God gives and takes away!!! I feel for the people of these churches because I do not doubt their love for God and their desire to serve God - I do believe that Brian is responsible for them being led astray and ultimately God will render judgement when and where he sees fit.
Destiny Church how can
Destiny Church how can anybody take Brian Tamaki seriously he isnt a good orator he doesnt understand the Bible and added to that he has the cheek to call himself Bishop by whose ordination??? not Gods not anyone in any kind of religious authority and he has none. The people he is ripping off are his own people and if they are that stupid then i guess they deserve what they get off him, sweet buggar all. I hear now he thinks he is God ...this man is seriously deranged puts me in mind of Hitler they way he shouts and carries on on the stage...he incites people of lower intelligents yes Richard Lewis you dont have a brain but then you probably are one of the ones that is well paid....at some point in time Brian Tamaki is going to Crash....that will prove to his sheep that he is just a clever human being ripping them off.....
