2 September 2008 - Counties Manukau Police made an overnight arrest for the murder of John Maeva (25 years), who was fatally shot outside his home around 12.30 am on Sunday the 31st of August 2008.

Detective Inspector John Tims says "a 31 year old unemployed Maori male will appear in the Manukau District Court this morning on a charge of murder". From the outset, we were confident of identifying and finding the offender.

The excellent work by the investigation team led to the accused man presenting himself at the Mangere Police Station late yesterday afternoon. Following the man's arrest, "an address in South Auckland was secured and we removed a motor vehicle from that address" says Mr Tims.

Police are still looking for the firearm involved in the shooting. Today, Police will be conducting a search of the property where the vehicle was removed from.

The victim's family were advised early this morning of the arrest and are pleased that an arrest has been made. This enables them to concentrate on funeral arrangements for John.
