Christchurch, Oct 31 NZPA - The Crown wants an open-ended preventive detention sentence considered for a Christchurch man convicted of sex offending on children in New Zealand and the Philippines.

The man has been in custody since he pleaded guilty on August 22, and now his case has been transferred from Christchurch District Court to the High Court, which has the power to impose the indefinite prison term.

Name suppression was continued at least until his sentencing on December 11.

Judge Michael Crosbie said: "The court has received the reports of health assessors. This is a matter where the crown wishes to argue before the High Court the possibility of a sentence of preventive detention in view of the reports and the matters therein.

"It is a matter where such a sentence is a possibility and it is not within the jurisdiction of this court. I therefore decline jurisdiction."

The 50-year-old man, who lived in south Christchurch and was employed as a cleaner, admitted charges of sexually violating a boy aged between eight and 12 years in Christchurch, sexual conduct with a child outside New Zealand, and two charges of possessing objectionable publications.

He admitted oral and anal sexual offending against one boy in Christchurch and while in the Philippines, another boy was undressed and manipulated into various poses on a bed while the man took digital photographs of him.

Other people were also in the room.

The other charges relate to child pornography images found when the man's home was searched. police say 591 images were found on his computer.
