High-Maintenance Orphan Calf Named Paris Hilton

Wellington, Sept 10 NZPA - A well-bred calf orphaned in last week's earthquake has been christened Paris Hilton, because of the high maintenance required for its upkeep, owners say.

Boulders the size of cars rained down on a herd of 150 cows at Christchurch's Tussock Hills Farm, Port Hills, during last Saturday's earthquake, killing two instantly, The Press reported.

Two others had to be put down after being severely injured, one leaving a calf only a few days old.

Farm manager Gavin Odering said the calf had been named Paris Hilton because it would require a lot of attention.

"It wouldn't be much different to her namesake, I imagine," he said.

The rest of the herd survived more boulders tumbling down in aftershocks over subsequent days.
