Plan Ahead For Safer, Easier Journeys This Long Weekend

27 May 2009 - The NZ Transport Agency reminds travellers heading out of Auckland for Queen's Birthday to take extra care on the roads with the long weekend marking the start of winter.

"With the shorter days and unsettled weather, it's important that people plan their journeys, give themselves plenty of time, and drive with patience to make sure they reach their destinations safely," said Wayne McDonald, the NZTA's Regional Director for Auckland and Northland.

Roads are likely to be very busy as people take advantage of the last long weekend break until the end of October. Traffic will start building on roads north and south from Auckland from Friday afternoon.

One of the busiest sections of highway will be SH1 between Puhoi and Warkworth. Motorists can avoid possible delays by using SH16 from the Silverdale interchange to Wellsford.

"This route is often less busy during peak times, making for a smoother and easier drive between Auckland and Northland," Mr McDonald said.

The NZTA will work with police to actively manage traffic on SH16 and SH1 to help people avoid hold-ups on the roads wherever possible. Drivers planning on using the Northern Gateway Toll Road should be aware that the cash payment kiosks at either end of the road will be busy. People can avoid the need to stop at the kiosks by paying online at or using the freephone 0800 40 20 20 at no extra cost. Payment can be made prior to using the toll road, or within three days after. The tolling contact centre will be opened throughout the weekend from 8am to 6pm.

"Travelling outside peak times and using SH16 as an alternative route are easy ways to beat the queues and have a smoother and safer journey," Mr McDonald said.
