Plaques Stolen From Gravestones At Memorial Park Cemetery

A number of metal plaques have been stolen and gravestones damaged at the Memorial Park cemetery, Linwood, over the weekend.

Christchurch City Council Urban Parks team leader John Revell says it appears that at least 12 plaques have been stolen and a number of others damaged, but the exact number is unclear at this stage.

People who are concerned that their family member's grave may have been affected are asked to check on the grave in person. The damage which has been seen so far is quite varied, and Council staff will not be able to ensure they have a full record of all of the graves which have been affected. The gravestones which have been targeted are those with brass or bronze plaques.

The Police have been notified of the incident. The Police have advised that people whose family member's grave has been damaged or plaque stolen should file a complaint with the Police. This will also assist people when making a claim with their insurer to repair the damage or replace the plaque.

If people wish to check the plot and block number of a particular grave they can contact the Christchurch City Council customer centre on 941 8999.
