The death of a security guard who was shot and killed during a Rotorua bank robbery in the 70s is being re-investigated by Police.
An ANZ banking facility on Old Taupo Road, Rotorua, was first targeted on 16 July, 1976 by an offender who tied up two tellers and security guard Howard Percy before stealing approximately $13,000 cash.
Four months later, on Guy Fawkes (5 November, 1976), the bank was subject to a second robbery. Howard Percy was on duty again and this time he tackled the offender resulting in him being shot twice. He died en route to hospital.
There was an extensive investigation but no-one has ever been charged. A small team of officers is now providing a fresh set of eyes to the case and this week they are renewing their public appeal for information about the homicide.
