Police Send More Specialists To Samoa

Wellington, Oct 3 NZPA - New Zealand's police presence in tsunami-devastated Samoa will be boosted by a further 14 staff.

Police international service group operations manager Superintendent Stu Wildon said 12 staff from the specialist search group and two specialist dog handlers with victim recovery dogs would leave for Samoa tomorrow morning.

They would join four New Zealand staff who had already arrived: two disaster victims identification specialists and two radio communications technicians.

Assistant Commissioner Steve Shortland went to Samoa on Thursday and would return today, having met with New Zealand High Commissioner Caroline Bilkey, the Samoan Police Commissioner and senior officers, and visited the worst hit areas.

He would brief police here on what further support was needed in Samoa.

Meanwhile, Pacific Blue general manager Adrian Hamilton-Manns said New Zealand travellers were giving generously to assist the people of Samoa and Tonga.

"Travellers are being very generous and on several flights to date we have collected more than $1000 per flight," he said.
