Prince WIlliam Wedding Announcement Lights Up UK Airwaves

Prince William is to marry his girlfriend of eight years Kate Middleton, in what is almost certain to be the TV event of 2011.

The announcement has barely been off the airwaves in the UK, reports the BBC, as media begin the build up to the first major Royal wedding since the Prince’s parents married in 1981.

The number of people watching the wedding will almost certainly exceed the 1 billion people who tuned in to see Prince Charles marry Lady Diana Spencer.

The wedding date has yet to be set, but will be sometime next UK spring, Prince Charles’ residence, Clarence House, has said.

The BBC and Sky News both had camera crews outside Middleton’s family home in Berkshire yesterday, interviewing “a succession of bemused dog-walkers in the ultra-rural setting while no members of the family seemed anywhere near”, according to the Hollywood Reporter website.

Barriers were put up outside Clarence House while armed police patrolled ahead of the couple’s first television appearance on Tuesday evening (UK time).

UK Prime Minister David Cameron welcomed the news, which he said he learned of at the Cabinet meeting.

“I was passed a piece of paper and announced the news in the middle of the Cabinet meeting, and a great cheer went up around the room. As well as this being a great moment for national celebration this is also about two young people and we must give them plenty of space to ready themselves,” he told reporters outside Downing Street.

“But obviously it is a great day for the country and a great day for the Royal Family and a great day for Prince William and for Kate.”

The newly elected Labour leader Ed Miliband tweeted his good wishes to the happy couple.

But while the Royal Family gears up for the big day, UK media begin to look at the most important question of all - what will the bride wear?
