Swift work from Wellington Police in liaison with Australian authorities has led to the arrest in Sydney today of a man sought in relation to an attempted robbery and bomb threat incident in Wellington earlier this month.
Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Borrell, Wellington CIB, said the arrest of a 34-year-old man followed information from the Wellington public after CCTV footage of the man featured in New Zealand media.
"As a direct result of help from media and the public Wellington Police learned that the man had left New Zealand for Sydney this morning," Detective Senior Sergeant Borrell said. "We were able to work quickly with NZ Police colleagues and the Australian Federal Police and the man was arrested at Sydney Airport on charges relating to the Featherston Street National Bank incident which happened on 9 December."
The man has been remanded in custody in Sydney until 28 December. New Zealand Police are now in the process of preparing and seeking extradition to face charges in Wellington.
"We are extremely grateful for the assistance from the public in identifying this man and also from the assistance provided by the Australian Federal Police for their help in his subsequent apprehension".
