Wellington, Dec 27 NZPA - The holiday weather is about to take a turn for the worse with a cold front forecast to sweep across the country bringing rain and strong winds over the next 24 hours.

MetService has issued warnings of heavy rain and severe northerly gales for many parts of the central and southern North Island, and for parts of the South Island.

Over the northern North Island from Waitomo and Bay of Plenty northwards, a period of gusty northerly gales is expected on Tuesday morning and early afternoon, along with brief heavy rain.

North or northwesterly winds may also reach gale force for a time about Buller this evening, and Nelson on Tuesday morning.

MetService said that at this stage winds in general were not expected to reach severe gale in these areas.

However, gusts may exceed 110kmh in a few exposed places.

The watch for heavy rain in Nelson and Buller has been upgraded to a warning which will be reviewed by 9pm today.
