Rain Lighter Than Expected In South Island

Wellington, Jan 7 NZPA - Lower South Island lake levels have peaked and should begin to drop by the end of the day, Queenstown Lakes District Council says.

The MetService this week forecast heavy rain for the area and campers were advised to watch for rapidly rising lake and river levels.

Council spokeswoman Jo Blick today said Lake Wakatipu and Lake Wanaka were still high but rain had been lighter than expected.

"It appears both lakes have risen as far as they're likely to and should begin dropping by the end of the day," she said.

Lake Wakatipu was this morning above the first warning level, but still below the official flood level.

Fine weather was forecast for the weekend.
