Wellington, Dec 30 NZPA - A couple who had to be rescued after capsizing in rough seas in southern Fiordland say they won't give up boating and hope to salvage their grounded boat in the coming days.

Ginny Neale survived a freezing night on a rock ledge while being battered by waves, while her partner Daryl Hewer was tipped out of their boat and washed on to a beach.

They were rescued about 5am by a Southern Lakes rescue helicopter, after weather cleared.

Ms Neale, of Haast, said she considered herself lucky to be alive and that the ordeal had given both her and her partner a new perspective on life.

The couple enjoyed Christmas with family in Dunedin.

"They were just so pleased that I was still alive and able to have Christmas with them. We were their Christmas present, the best present ever."

Despite the ordeal, Ms Neale told the Southland Times she would definitely go boating again.

Mr Hewer hoped to launch a salvage operation for the grounded boat in southern Fiordland in coming days, weather permitting.

The motor had broken down because the sludge tank was full and it had blocked the fuel injectors.
