Auckland, March 20 NZPA - Police have opened several roads in Tokoroa, which were cordoned off after a gas main was ruptured by workmen.
The leak was noticed about 11.40am and police cordoned off several roads and ordered about 200 people out of their homes.
The roads were reopened about 1.30pm and people were allowed back into their homes the west of the main highway, between the railway line and Papanui St and from Baird Rd to Bridge St.
Police said the evacuation was a precaution and a steady breeze effectively dispersed the escaping gas.
The leak was thought to have been caused by workmen digging at the intersection of Papanui and Noel St.
