Antarctica New Zealand, in collaboration with the New Zealand Antarctic Society, is seeking volunteers for this coming summer season in Antarctica. The two volunteers will be sourced from New Zealand Antarctic Society membership and will be helping with project work at Scott Base during January 2010.
Antarctica New Zealand's Chief Executive, Lou Sanson, said, "We have run versions of this programme that have been successful in the past and this has given some great names in the Antarctic community their first experience of the Ice. Our staff at Scott Base work hard and the volunteers will assist in maintaining the Base to a high standard. Our relationship with the New Zealand Antarctic Society has always been strong and this collaboration will further benefit both organisations."
This season the volunteers will be working primarily on exterior painting work around Scott Base and will be part of a 40-strong team at the Base over the summer.
Norm McPherson, President of the New Zealand Antarctic Society, said, "Most of our members have worked or lived at the Base over the last 50 years of its operation and we are proud to continue our strong relationship with Antarctica New Zealand through the volunteer programme. Gaining first-hand experience of how the Base is run, while helping out with maintenance over the month, will be a fantastic opportunity for the two volunteers and we look forward to continuing this programme in the future. " An application form for the volunteer positions can be accessed from the New Zealand Antarctic Society website: www.antarctic.org.nz
Applicants must be members of the New Zealand Antarctic Society and must be resident in New Zealand. Applications for the volunteer positions close 30 September.
