Severe Weather Heads For Westland

A front is expected to move rapidly over the South Island during Monday.

The northwest flow ahead of the front is expected to bring a brief burst of heavy rain to the Southern Alps. Around 40 to 50mm is possible about the main divide in a 6 to 9 hour period with 20 to 30mm possible within 10km east of the divide.

A rainfall warning has been issued for Fiordland but at this stage rainfall totals for the ranges of Westland and the Canterbury and Otago headwaters are expected to be below warning criteria.

MetService forecasters will continue to monitor the situation and people in these areas should keep up to date with latest forecasts in case this watch needs to be upgraded to a full warning.
