Shortland St-Style Clinics Spread To Gold Coast

Doctors on Australia's Gold Coast say a New Zealand-style private "accident and emergency" medical clinic such as portrayed in the Shortland Street television soap will plug gaps in the local health service as a much-needed halfway point between emergency care and general practice.

Dr Mark Byrne, founder of the new Benowa-based Gold Coast Accident and Medical Clinic told an Australian medical news website it was a "new" concept that could cater for a wide range of cases requiring rapid medical care.

Inspiration for the Gold Coast Accident and Medical Clinic concept came from New Zealand, where this model of acute medical care had been used for the past 20 years, he said.
