Small Quake In Hawke's Bay

The two earthquakes measuring 5.2 and 3.6 in magnitude felt in the Hawke's Bay this morning are not related to Saturday's earthquake in Christchurch.

Website Geonet says the 5.2 earthquake struck at 10.48am at a depth of 15km with the epicentre 20km south-east of Porangahau. The 3.6 earthquake struck just after 10am at a depth of 40km, 30km east of Waipawa.

Practices in Waipukurau and Waipawa felt the shakes, but say they weren't major.

When Napier GP and NZMA chair Peter Foley felt this morning's quake he immediately turned on his TV, thinking Christchurch had been hit again.

Dr Foley was one of many GPs in Christchurch for the RNZCGP conference when a 7.1 Richter quake hit on Saturday morning. Today's Hawke's Bay shake "felt like a cough", he says, compared to his experience in Christchurch quake.

"We weren't worried about ourselves at all," Dr Foley says.

Those few quakes could well be foreshocks, so I would veer on the side of caution for now.

Two quakes??? We've had a

Two quakes??? We've had a small swarm of them, here in the Bay; about six or seven in the last few days. The fact that they are small makes them get missed in the rush of our lives. We, NZ that is, get shaken up about 15,000 times a year, but most are too small to notice, thank goodness. I'd rather have lots of little shakes than a single Darfield/Chch size one, not to mention all the after shocks.
I lived there until I was 13 and have been back to visit a few times. I'm glad I don't live there now. It's heart breaking to see how much damage was done in those few seconds but it's heart warming to see how people are coping and helping each other get through the hard times.
