Right to Life applauds the doctors and nurses of the Southland Hospital for refusing to be involved in the killing of unborn at the Hospital. They have upheld the sanctity of life of every unborn child and opposed a culture of death.

The citizens of Southland can be very proud of the doctors and nurses of Southland who are promoting a culture of life by upholding the highest traditions of medicine to do no harm and to have the utmost respect for the inalienable right to life for unborn children. They recognise that abortion is not a health service for mothers and their unborn, it has no place in the public health service. Protection is provided for their consciences by section 46 of the Contraception Sterilisation and Abortion Act 1977. Their defence of life is noble, they join many health professionals in New Zealand who refuse to be involved in the taking of innocent life.

The Southern District Health Board sought to impose an "abortion service" on the Southland Hospital without the knowledge or consent of the community. It was the Southland Times that first learnt of the Board’s intentions following an investigation. The proposal is widely opposed by the staff at the Southland Hospital and many in the community. Why is the Southern District Health Board refusing to listen to its own medical staff and the community to which it is accountable. It is deplorable that the Board refuses to confirm or deny that abortions have commenced at the Southland Hospital.

The Board have been unable to find a doctor or nurses at the Southland Hospital who were prepared to assist in terminating the lives of unborn children at the Hospital. The Board recently advised Right to Life in a letter that it planned to bring an abortionist from Queenstown at great expense for a day each week to terminate the lives of the unborn. The abortionist would be assisted by two midwives from Southland.

Midwives are the guardians of new life, they have the privilege and duty of helping mothers bring their children into the world. It is therefore a cause of profound sadness that two midwives are prepared to assist in the taking of innocent and defenceless new life at the Southland Hospital.

Right to Life earnestly encourages other doctors, nurses and midwives in New Zealand to uphold the traditions of their professions to respect the right to life of unborn children and to refuse to be involved in the killing of the innocent. Right to Life also encourages other communities to follow the courageous example of Southlanders by opposing the killing of unborn children in their Hospitals and communities. There is a growing and concerted movement to defend life and oppose a culture of death that will ultimately bring to an end the abortion holocaust that is decimating our nation.
