If you are in need of day surgery or hospital care, then the best place you can go is St George's Hospital in Christchurch. Australian-based independent auditors Press Ganey have just given St George's Hospital a huge accolade - they ranked then in the top 1% of the 1215 hospital units and 99 day surgery units that they recently surveyed. The Australasian-wide survey was completed by over 38,000 hospital and day care patients and was extremely comprehensive. Tony Hunter, CEO, St George's Hospital., said the survey covered patient satisfaction, admission process from reception, pre-admission to surgery, a wide range of nursing criteria, meals, facilities, housekeeping, functionality of the facility, visitor and family services, waiting times, doctor care (surgeon and anaesthetist), discharge procedures, personal issues, post discharge arrangements including pain relief and post discharge follow up. "The result is a true testament to the commitment, dedication and professionalism of all staff across al the services provided within the hospital. The result also endorses our ongoing commitment to patient care, particularly the quality programmes the hospital has in place," he said. Mr Hunter said that the award was also a timely lift for all staff, many of whom were adversely affected in the recent quake. "The result is a very timely accolade and deserved by all staff who have shown true heart in sometimes challenging circumstances in the past few weeks. We are not just another hospital, but a great one thanks to our staff," he said. Mr Hunter said that he would like to see more New Zealand hospitals benchmark themselves against the best in Australasia as the public scrutiny of the results ensured St George's continually strived to improve. "Self assessment is one thing, but it is the assessment by your patients that is the most important," he said.
