Strong 6.3 earthquake rocks eastern NZ

An earthquake measuring 6.3 has rocked parts of eastern New Zealand, from Bay of Plenty to Canterbury. The earthquake was very deep, at 294kms, taking it out of the tsunami risk and instead meaning the quake is felt much further afield.

GeoNet describes the intensity as "moderate".

"Felt in Napier. Hubby held on to the TV as it was wobbling quite a bit" wrote Jo Coles on the WeatherWatch.co.nz Facebook page.

Despite the quake being north of East Cape as of 6:40pm most of the reports WeatherWatch.co.nz had received came in from Wellington and Hawkes Bay with other reports also from Gisborne, Masteron, Palmerston North, Bay of Plenty and even Christchurch.

The earthquake was 195kms north of Te Araroa East Cape.
