Wellington, Nov 1 NZPA - The 22-year-old Dunedin woman who was raped by Liam Reid says she is "over the moon" with the guilty verdict and recovering well from her ordeal.

In the High Court at Christchurch yesterday, Reid was found guilty of murdering and raping deaf woman Emma Agnew, and raping, sexually violating, attempting to murder and robbing the Dunedin woman nine days later.

After less than four hours of deliberations, the jury found him guilty on all six charges.

"I'm really happy. The whole family is really stoked," the Dunedin student, now living in Australia, told the Otago Daily Times.

It is over, and I can now think about being a 22-year-old again, she said.

In November last year, the woman was walking home in the early hours when she was attacked in bushes beside a carpark in central Dunedin.

She was punched, choked, threatened and repeatedly raped by Reid.

She was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, she said.

"I don't want people to feel sorry for me. I want everyone to know that I'm doing OK and getting on with life."

The past year had opened her eyes to how she wanted to live her life.

Life was so unpredictable and she realised any day it could be taken away from her.

Looking back, she could see herself moving through phases and knew she had come a long way.

The first three months had been the toughest, and she would often stay in bed all day, afraid to go anywhere.

"Sometimes I have sad days; sometimes I have flashbacks...but I make sure I talk to someone and try to finish by having a laugh and feeling better.

Every day was a bit better and she was starting to get her sense of humour back, she said.

She told the paper she wanted to thank all the people who had been there for her.

"It's important they know how I feel and get the acknowledgement they deserve...it's not about me; it's about giving back to everyone who has helped me."

She was now looking forward to next year, "I have my whole life ahead of me", she said.
