At last, the perfect New Year's resolution - get your teenagers to cook the family meal once a week.
"This is a win: win for both parents and teenagers; parents get a night off and the teenagers gain a skill for a lifetime", says Glenda Gourley, director of a new website, blog and e-recipe book www.itsmyturntocook.com.
"Many teens love their food but are intimidated by the kitchen. Presented by Tauranga teenager Claire Gourley www.itsmyturntocook.com is packed with tasty recipes, tips and ideas to inspire teens to have fun in the kitchen and have a go at making a meal."
"Cooking and nutrition are vital life skills. The last thing any parent wants is for their kids to live on takeaways and toast in their first year of flatting. The earlier we can introduce our kids to the kitchen, the more likely they are to become confident cooks, making themselves healthy meals when they leave home."
"New Year is the perfect opportunity to introduce kids to the idea of cooking, while they have time to experiment and build confidence."
"It doesn't look like the average recipe book a parent might buy for themselves - because teens aren't interested in that. It's tech-savvy, with embedded YouTube videos, and we play on the issues teens care about, particularly choosing foods that are environmentally sound choices."
The first eBook in the It's my Turn to Cook series is based on potatoes with a wide range of meals - from awesome filled baked potatoes, scrummy soup, to-die-for wedges, and the best warm salad you can image. "The vast majority of teenagers love potatoes so they are likely to be more receptive to having a go and making a meal."
Claire Gourley, who is the face of Its My Turn to Cook, has played a key role in developing the website and e-book.
"If you are like me, cooking isn't second nature; unless someone shows me or tells me I don't really know what to do. A recipe telling me to 'poach an egg' assumes I know what 'poach' means! I wanted to include the answers to questions I have had to ask - like 'how much water to put in the pot?' 'Which vegetables take longer to cook in a stir fry?'"
