Tomatoes Top Seed In NZ Fruit And Vegetable Charts

Tomatoes are the number one favourite vegetable in New Zealand, but only just ...

The latest Household Economic Survey figures show New Zealanders bought $99 million worth of tomatoes in 2010, only slightly ahead of our spending on potatoes, at $98.9 million.

Traditionally it's always a close fought race at the top of the list of favourite vegetables, but it's not so for fruit.

The number one selling fruit in New Zealand (as it was in 2007 and 2004) was the banana. New Zealanders bought $142 million worth of bananas, $40 million more than we spent on any other fresh fruit or vegetable.

Horticulture New Zealand chief executive Peter Silcock says it's just a little bit disappointing to see an imported fruit product claiming such a significant portion of the fresh fruit and vegetable sector.

"At least the mighty Kiwi apple is our second favourite.

"But the most important information to come out of this survey is it shows New Zealanders are buying more fruit and vegetables, and that's good for the whole country."

Other notable movers in the Statistics New Zealand survey are: onions up from 9th place (2007, $28m) to 6th, at $37m. significant increase in spending on apples, from $84m in 2007 to $98m in 2010. pears up from 9th place (2007, $20m) to 6th, at $27.8m. watermelons have jumped five places to 11th up from 16th in 2007 blueberries feature on the fruit list for the first time, in 14th place
