The tropical cyclone warning for Fiji has now been removed. Tomas continues to weaken and may be downgraded to a tropical storm today.

A RNZAF C-130 Hercules arrived in Fiji yesterday carrying emergency supplies.

The Hercules transported supplies to Labasa, and then conducted a reconnaissance flight over areas in the Northern Division affected by the cyclone, including the island of Cikobia.

Initial assessments from that flight suggest that there is obvious damage to buildings, and evidence of salt-water inundation.

Weather conditions and daylight hours prevented further reconnaissance yesterday. The imagery and information from the reconnaissance flight has been shared with the Fiji authorities.

An RAAF Hercules arrived Fiji last night and the two Hercules will be carrying out further humanitarian tasks required by the Fiji authorities today - these are likely to include transport of relief items to affected areas, and reconnaissance of the Lau group.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs has announced that New Zealand will contribute an initial $1 million dollars to assist with relief efforts in Fiji.

Discussions are underway on how New Zealand's contribution can be best used to assist the response in Fiji - this could include a contribution to the Red Cross; the purchase of food and materials, and support for the local response.

Tropical Cyclone Ului

Tropical Cyclone Ului is now weakening and is currently a category 3 cyclone.

The main areas affected by Ului are Bellona and Rennell Islands (total popn 2500).

There are no reports of casualties. There are reports of damage to buildings and houses.

New Zealand stands ready to assist if required.

New Zealanders in the affected area

There are around 480 New Zealanders registered with the Ministry as being in Fiji.

We encourage New Zealanders in Fiji to contact family and friends to confirm their wellbeing.

The New Zealand High Commission in Suva has confirmed that the major tourist areas have been largely unaffected by the cyclone and has made contact with most resorts in the affected areas where NZ citizens are understood to be staying.

While Nadi and Nausori airports are now operational travellers with immediate plans to travel to Fiji are being advised to check with their travel agent or accommodation provider for information on domestic flights and possible resort damage.

New Zealanders currently in Fiji are advised to follow any instructions issued by local authorities, monitor local media reports and register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade at www.safetravel.govt.nz
