2 APRIL 2009 - Professor Peter Hunter and business leader John Buchanan were among the outstanding kiwis to receive World Class New Zealander awards at a gala dinner in Auckland last night.

Professor Peter Hunter is director of the Auckland Bioengineering Institute, a large scale research institute at The University of Auckland. Dr John Buchanan is a Business School Advisory Board member and University graduate.

Seven awards were presented by Kea New Zealand and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise to the country's greatest "tall poppies", for giving their time, knowledge and skills to help New Zealand companies and industries succeed internationally. The category winners were named in February and received the awards last night. An additional supreme winner, Richard Taylor of Weta Workshop, was announced at the event.

Professor Hunter won the "Research, Science, Technology and Academia" category. Professor Hunter is best-known for his pioneering mathematical modelling of the human heart. He also heads the Institute's flagship Human Physiome Project, an international network of researchers developing mathematical models of all aspects of human physiology. He is a fellow of London's prestigious Royal Society.

British-based John Buchanan, one of New Zealand's most astute business exports, won the "Finance, Investment and Business Services" category. He is chairman of the UK Friends of the University of Auckland and an advisor to the Business School. After earning a PhD in Chemistry from The University of Auckland, he went on to study at Oxford University, Wolfson College and Harvard Business School. Dr Buchanan had a 33-year career at BP, retiring as the Group Chief Financial Officer in 2002. He is currently non-executive director on the global boards of Vodafone, AstraZeneca and BHPBilliton and is Chairman designate of Smith & Nephew plc.
