West Coast Police are currently at the scene of an accident at a gold mine site at Ruatapu, near Hokitika where a four-wheel drive vehicle has rolled into a pond.

The driver of the vehicle managed to escape and run several kilometres to raise the alarm about 7pm.

It is believed there are other people trapped inside the vehicle.

Emergency services are at the scene.
