A Very Happy Birthday From Instant Kiwi

An Upper Hutt woman's disappointment with her birthday present last year, was redeemed this year when she won $250,000 from an Instant Kiwi prize given to her by her partner today, says NZ Lotteries' Chief Executive, Todd McLeay.

"Last year I gave her a present she really didn't like, it was a sort of coffee table I'd put together! But this year I got her a whole lot of things she wanted, plus a couple of Instant Kiwi tickets which she loves," says the woman's partner.

Turns out, she loved this year's present a whole lot, especially when one ticket revealed she'd won $50,000 a year for five years.

When they came to the Wellington NZ Lotteries' office to claim their prize this morning, they were already well clued up as to how things worked with Lotto.

"My grandma won a share of First Division Lotto ten years ago, so we know about how prizes work already - we're going to gradually pay off the mortgage anyway, so there won't be much left for anything else each year."

The woman and her partner, who wish to remain anonymous, had planned an overseas trip in a couple of years, so will be extending that holiday a bit, and would help out a family member or two - but otherwise, not much would change.

"We like the simple life, nothing fancy or flash, so this will make things easier, but won't make a difference to how we do things in general," she says.

The $5 Big Break Instant Kiwi ticket was bought at Countdown Upper Hutt. The game still has two top prizes of $250,000 left on it, which means potentially another two very welcome birthday presents!
