After six years as lead sponsor of the Waikato Rugby Union it is with great sadness that Vodafone will end its association with the Union.

Vodafone's head of sponsorship, Richard Howarth, says the decision was not an easy one.

"We've enjoyed a great partnership with Waikato Rugby, the highlight being the Air New Zealand Cup win in 2006, however every year we review all our sponsorships and look at our overall portfolio, and we have taken the decision to consolidate our activities in 2010 in order to be more effective in delivering benefits and fantastic experiences to our customers, and fans of sport and music."

Vodafone will work with the WRU to assist in finding a new sponsor and will continue to support the Union by providing the free TXT alerts service for Mooloo fans.

"Vodafone also has partnerships in the Waikato region with the Chief's Super Rugby franchise, the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic netball team and Team Vodafone at the Hamilton 400 V8 supercars."

Waikato Rugby Union Chief Executive Graham Bowen says Vodafone gained a lot in the Waikato market through their sponsorship of Waikato Rugby.

"We enjoyed a good working relationship with Vodafone over the years, and shared some successes on and off the field during this time. We are naturally disappointed to see their sponsorship end, however, that is the reality of sports marketing and sponsorship is this ever-changing environment. We are confident in the near future to grow our family of sponsors associated with Waikato Rugby".
