Wanganui Mayor Michael Laws today welcomed a District Court decision upholding the council's anti-gang patch bylaw.
The bylaw was legally challenged by Hells Angels in a test case and heard before District Court Judge PJ Butler on 3 December 2009.
A Hells Angels member, Bryan Vincent Moore, was arrested for wearing gang insignia and the Hells Angels used the arrest as a test case against the anti-gang patch law and bylaw.
District Court Judge Butler convicted Bryan Vincent Moore and ordered the destruction of the gang patch.
Mayor Michael Laws said that today's decision was "one up for the good guys".
"The Wanganui community wanted this law, Parliament obliged, and now the Courts have upheld it. This is something of a rejoinder to those council critics who argued that our bylaw wouldn't survive a judicial test."
The Wanganui District Council is also partnering the Wanganui Police in seeking a Court order to dismantle gang fortifications at the Hells Angels' Kaikokopu Road address.
