New Zealand winter weather finally warmed up, and climate figures just in show New Zealanbd experienced it's warmest August on record*.

Auckland climate scientist Dr Jim Salinger said the mean New Zealand August temperature was 10.4 C, being 1.7 deg C above average and making this the warmest in reliable climate observations back to the late 1860s. This compares with cool temperartures in June and July when temperatures were 7.7 and 7.5 deg C, -0.7 and -0.5 deg C below average.

Temperatures in August were 3 deg C warmer than July which means New Zealand temperatures in August were more typical of spring, than winter. The normal New Zealand temperature for September is 10.4 deg C, the same as that recorded in August 2009.

This compares with global temperatures of 16.12 deg C in June and 16.37 deg C in July, 0.62 and 0.57 deg C above average respectively, and the 2nd and 5th warmest respectively. However the global oceans had their warmest June and Julyt month's on record of 16.99 deg C for both months, with both months 0.59 deg C above average. The August figures are not in yet.
