25 June 2008 - Figures released today showing Aucklanders are moving out of the city to rural areas in unprecedented numbers comes with a word of caution from Horticulture New Zealand.

"Please remember, people in the country are working.

"There are tractors operating, trucks and machinery going all day and sometimes all night during harvest times.

"We have sprayers, harvesters, ploughs, irrigation pumps, frost fans and bird scarers, and that's just in horticulture", HortNZ President Andrew Fenton says.

HortNZ regularly represents the interests of grower businesses in local authority hearings up and down the country, to remind councils and residents of the needs of commercial horticulture.

"It does concern us city people have totally the wrong idea about what life in rural New Zealand is like. We find ourselves defending activities which have been done without any problems for years.

"When a new subdivision pops up next door, our growers end up in a council hearing defending business practices which are central to their operation and provide local employment.

"The New Zealand countryside is not all about frolicking spring lambs and daffodils waving on the roadside," Andrew says.
