Wellington Winners Walk Away With Windfalls

Both of the top prizes won in Saturday night's Lotto draw have been claimed today by Wellington region locals, says NZ Lotteries' Chief Executive, Todd McLeay.

First in the door at NZ Lotteries' Wellington office was the winner of the top $1 million Lotto First Division prize sold at Pak N Save Kilbirnie.

The happy winner said he will be celebrating in style - with a can of Fanta! The local Wellington man, who wished to remain anonymous, doesn't drink alcohol so is looking forward to opening a can of his favourite soft drink to mark the day. "I usually don't get a single number on a line, so when I checked my ticket and kept getting number after number right, I couldn't believe it - it couldn't possibly be me!" says the winner. "But I'm one of those people, that no matter how bad things get, it always seems to work out for me in the end - I guess I'm lucky." The winner hasn't made any big decisions about what he's going to do with his huge windfall, but knows he's going to enjoy it. "The world's my oyster, so I'm going to make the most of it." Meanwhile, the winner of a $442,051 Lotto Strike prize sold at New World Stokes Valley almost didn't buy a Lotto Strike ticket.

"I was only going to get a Lotto Powerball ticket, but the girl at the Lotto counter told me I should consider getting a Triple Dip as that would enter me in Lotto's Hot 100 promotion.

"It was the Strike ticket in the Triple Dip that won me the top prize - I'm going back to the store to thank that Lotto operator as I would never have won otherwise!" said the happy winner, who also wishes to remain anonymous.

"I'm between jobs at the moment so I'm going to look at buying a business with my winnings. I plan to use the money wisely so that I can create a nice future for myself.

"Of course I may buy a few toys first, starting with a new car," laughed the winner.
