Porirua Police are appealing for information about a white utility vehicle seen driving in Pukerua Bay prior to a fatal accident involving a truck.

A white Nissan single cab utility was seen driving north on State Highway 1 with a length of timber protruding over the driver's cab on a strange angle shortly before the accident.

The accident occurred at about 6.50am on 26 February as a large white truck drove south into the Pukerua Bay township. As the truck approached Wairaka Road, the driver's wing mirror was struck by a piece of wood being carried by a vehicle heading in the opposite direction.

The truck's 36 year old driver was struck by the truck's wing mirror, knocking him unconscious. Due to the quick thinking of his female passenger, the vehicle was safely brought to a standstill 100m down the road. The driver was airlifted by Westpac Rescue Helicopter to Wellington Hospital. He subsequently died of his injuries.
