Woman Accused Of Abducting Her Baby From Caregiver

Wellington, Jan 15 NZPA - A mother has been charged with abducting her baby from the child's caregiver.

The 23-year-old was granted name suppression and remanded in custody by consent when she appeared in Nelson District Court on Tuesday.

She has also been charged with injuring with intent to injure, assault and two counts of intentional damage, the Nelson Mail reported.

She did not enter a plea and will appear again on January 27.

Nelson Bays police acting area commander Senior Sergeant John Price alleged the woman took her eight-month-old baby on Monday morning.

Police launched an extensive operation to find the pair and they were found in central Nelson about midday Monday.

The baby was safe and well, but the woman allegedly assaulted the baby's caregiver and a police officer.
