Hawke's Bay police are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found in a horse paddock late yesterday afternoon.

The woman was found dead in a paddock in a rural area near Flaxmere in Hastings. She has not been formally identified.

Detective Sergeant Darren Pritchard said the death was being treated as unexplained at this stage.

"The investigation is in its very early stages. Police are in an information-gathering phase and are making area inquiries and speaking to any possible witnesses who may have been in the area yesterday.

"Scene examinations are currently underway and at this stage, there is no indication as to how the woman died or what the circumstances of her death were," Mr Pritchard said.

A post-mortem will be conducted in the coming days and this will give police a clearer picture of how she died.
