Wellington, Aug 30 NZPA - A Gisborne woman has been jailed for robbing an 88-year-old mobility-scooter bound woman of her purse and wedding ring, and targeting other vulnerable elderly victims.

Kelly Awhimia Rose Te Purei was sentenced in Gisborne District Court to a total of 34 months' imprisonment after being convicted of robbery, receiving and obtaining pecuniary advantage, The Gisborne Herald reported.

Te Purei following the 88-year-old woman in her car before snatching her handbag containing her wedding ring, leaving her with a bruised arm.

In March, a 90-year-old woman's handbag was stolen and someone later went to the woman's home posing as a bank officer to get the PIN number.

Te Purei went on to commit 19 charges of fraud, using the card to withdraw $3498 from cash machines in Auckland, Wellington and Palmerston North.

In December, an 82-year-old widow was kidnapped at gunpoint in Auckland by another person. Within hours Te Purei was trying to use her ATM card.

Judge Joanna Maze said Te Purei planned her offending and chose older and vulnerable victims.
