Auckland, Oct 14 NZPA - A woman today told how she yelled at a driver to stop when he crashed his car into her friend and drove off with his body stuck underneath.

Medical Ripata was giving evidence at the retrial in the High Court in Auckland of Prestman Vesiputa Tauira for the murder of Faafetail Lafolua in south Auckland on August 18, 2006.

Mr Lafolua was at a vigil in Otahuhu for gang violence victim, Haruru Pekepo, when a fight broke out with an unknown group who drove past in three cars.

Tauira, 26, a sandblaster of Mangere, admitted he was driving the car which killed Mr Lafoula but said his intention was to break up the brawl, which involved one of his friends. A jury in December was unable to reach a verdict on whether Tauira was guilty of murder.

Today Ms Ripata said she had not witnessed what had led to the fight but grabbed a golf club from her car and used it to attack one of the men.

When the golf club broke on one of the brawlers she grabbed a bottle and broke it on the kerb and used it to try to stop the fight.

Everything happened very quickly and when Mr Lafolua was hit by the car she tried to hit at Tauira, yelling at him to stop, she said.

She yelled at Tauira that her mate was under the car, that he was killing him, she said.

Mr Lafolua wasn't moving, she said.

The trial continues tomorrow.
