Wellington, Oct 14 NZPA - An unprovoked road rage attack has landed a Rotorua youth in court, police say.

Senior Sergeant Ed van den Broek told The Dominion Post a fight started when the 17-year-old, a pedestrian, slapped the side of a car and the driver stopped at Taupo's Old Taupo Rd and Devon St intersection, asking the youth why he had hit his car.

"There was a scuffle on a neighbour's lawn and the pedestrian threw a pot plant, and then a ladder at the driver cutting his arm," Mr van den Broek said.

"When the driver attempted to get in back his car the pedestrian tried to punch him through the open window.

"It was a totally unprovoked attack, they did not know each other."

The 17-year-old has been charged with assault with a weapon and was to appear in Rotorua District Court this morning.
