Wellington, April 9 NZPA - A youth has appeared in court over a Napier street attack which left a man with serious head injuries.

The 15-year-old appeared in Napier Youth Court on a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Judge Paul Von Dadelszen remanded the boy in custody for sentencing in Napier District Court on June 12.

One of two other youths involved was charged with common assault and referred to police youth services.

A third youth who was at the scene was not charged.

The attack happened early on February 15, when the 34-year-old victim was assaulted at the side of Milton Road, then pushed in front of a passing taxi.

Hawke's Bay Today reported the boy had admitted the charge at a family group conference this month.

He also admitted an additional charge of aggravated robbery, relating to an earlier incident when he robbed a person of a bottle of liquor and cash.

Youth Advocate Derek Quilliam said the boy was a young man and one should not lose hope for people of his age who lacked maturity and insight.
