"I’m pleased to announce today that I will be putting my name forward to contest the leadership of the National Party.

I am standing because I believe I have the compassion, intellect, integrity and experience to be leader of the party and lead us to victory in 2020.

We’re fortunate to have a talented caucus with a great balance of fresh energy, leadership and experience.

One thing I believe John Key and Bill English did well was to build multiple layers of leadership in the party. This means we have exceptional depth and capability, and I want to further encourage and draw on this for the benefit of New Zealanders.

The National Party is at our strongest when we are able to unite the many communities and differing views in New Zealand, from urban to rural, conservative to liberal.

As a result of my background, I believe I am well placed to understand and bring together these diverse communities and views. I was born and raised in Auckland, growing up with a single mum, before moving to Canterbury to train and work as a lawyer, marrying my farmer husband, bringing up two children and spending six years as a cabinet minister.

I’m confident we will win in 2020 if we continue to harness the tremendous depth and talent within our team.

Our country deserves strong leadership and real solutions to issues such as economic growth, housing and helping our most vulnerable, which the current government has yet to prove it can tackle.

I have the skills and experience to tackle these issues and make progress for all New Zealanders.

My vision is for a prosperous and compassionate nation that backs those who want to get ahead."
