Manuwai Wells will be the new Kawakawa-Moerewa Subdivision representative on the Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Community Board.

Ms Wells was selected in a by-election called after former community board member, Kelly Stratford, was elected to the Far North District Council in February.

The final count at the close of the by-election on Thursday 24 May showed Ms Wells had a commanding lead of 483 votes over her nearest rival, Lucie Green, who received 102 votes.

There were two other candidates in the by-election. James McDonald received 41 votes, while Gray Phillips received 25 votes.

A total of 657 votes were cast in the postal ballot, or 26.75 per cent of the 2456 eligible electors.

The results will be published in local newspapers on Wednesday 30 May. Details of the by-election can be found on the Far North District Council’s website at www.fndc.govt.nz.
