New Zealand First has welcomed the passage of the Ngāti Tūwharetoa Claims Settlement Bill, which represents the full and final settlement of historical Treaty of Waitangi claims of the central North Island iwi Ngāti Tūwharetoa.

The settlement includes compensation of $25 million, and cultural, commercial and other redress for Ngāti Tūwharetoa, comprehensively settling their Treaty claims.

"This is a milestone in the relationship between the iwi and the Crown, a long overdue acknowledgement of, and redress for, the economic marginalisation suffered by Ngāti Tūwharetoa," says Hon Shane Jones, New Zealand First Spokesperson for Treaty Settlements.

"What we do today creates the platform to move forward. This Bill seeks to right the wrongs of the past.

"New Zealand First acknowledges the professional and timely manner in which the bill has been progressed, despite several overlapping claims.

"We hope that future claims can be settled in such a timely and comprehensive manner," says Mr Jones.
