10 JULY 2008 - Alliance Party Health Spokesperson Tom Dowie agrees with Greymouth Mayor Tony Kokshoorn that it is unacceptable for West Coast women to be forced to travel to give birth, due to the critical shortage of obstetricians.

Mr Dowie believes it is the devastating Student Loan Scheme and punishing tertiary fees that limit the number of New Zealand students willing to take on expensive and intense areas of training such as obstetrics.

He says the Alliance would fully fund tertiary education through progressive taxation in order to encourage as many New Zealanders as possible to go back into the professions we are critically lacking in.

"Surely it is better to have too many qualified staff, than not enough," says Mr Dowie.

"Questions need to be asked of this government if they are scrimping in education when the safe birthing of our children is at stake."
