9 September 2008 - The release of the NZWood 'Resources' website this week marks an important step in expanding the use of wood as a building material in New Zealand, Forestry Minister Jim Anderton, said today.

Jim Anderton said he was very impressed with the breadth and depth of information on the new website, especially the technical information about wood that designers and engineers needed.

"Wood has many economical and environmental benefits for the country, not least being the ability of trees to absorb and store the carbon dioxide that contributes to climate change.

"In encouraging greater use of wood the NZWood programme supports one of the Government's approaches to encouraging more planting of trees: use more wood = plant more trees = more carbon sinks, and wood is an infinitely renewable resource."

Jim Anderton said the Government had provided a significant amount of seed funding for the NZWood programme, around $2.5 million over the last 18 months. This website is an important part of the overall programme.

Other Government initiatives to promote forest establishment include the Emissions Trading Scheme and the Afforestation Grant Scheme.
