17 March 2009 - The Minister of Youth Affairs needs to explain whether she shares the view of National's coalition partner, after ACT called for the Ministry of Youth Development to be axed, Labour's Youth Affairs spokesperson Jacinda Ardern says.

Roger Douglas said at ACT's conference "we should be axing whole programs and Government bodies" and the Ministry of Youth Development "should be amongst the first to go."

"It's very rare for ACT to make any statement on youth issues, unless it relates to crime. I'm disappointed that their first mention of young people is to call for the Ministry to be cut, when it represents young peoples' interests and invests in services for them locally" Ms Ardern said.

She called on the Minister of Youth Affairs, Paula Bennett to explain whether she shares the view of her party's coalition partner.

"The Youth Sector deserves better than this kind of instability, and the Minister should clarify whether any changes to the Ministry of Youth Development are on the table," Ms Ardern said.
