Australians are reaping the benefits of their Government having a clear plan to weather the recession with their unemployment level falling for the fourth consecutive month, Labour Leader Phil Goff said today.

"In contrast John Key's lack of a plan to keep the Kiwi economy moving has seen unemployment reach a 16 year high, jumping 0.8% in the last quarter to 7.3%," Phil Goff said.

"168,000 Kiwis are now unemployed and National has done little to help protect or create jobs. New Zealand's unemployment rate is now over a third higher than across the Tasman.

"Kevin Rudd in Australia committed the Australian Labour Government to tackling unemployment as a priority and developed a plan and a stimulus package to do so.

"In New Zealand all we have had is the rhetoric of the Jobs Summit, and the impact of the last Labour budget which did provide stimulation to counteract the international downturn."

Phil Goff says Australians are now benefiting from their Government's approach by going back to work in their thousands.

"Unfortunately for Kiwis, National party inaction has meant uncertainty still looms around the job market," Phil Goff said.

"That is the reality that thousands of Kiwis are living because of John Key's lack of commitment to any plan to keep Kiwis in work.

"Australia has enjoyed a Government that has been proactive, has stimulated the economy and has committed itself to investing more in skills training and education.

"Instead of making jobs his priority, John Key has made breaking his election promises his priority.

"How many jobs will be created by hiking GST up to 15%? Why didn't we hear how John Key's GST plan will create jobs earlier this week?

"Kiwis struggling to make ends meet will be looking across the Tasman and seeing unemployment falling while at home their Prime Minister wants to lift GST to 15%.

"You can't blame them for wanting to scratch their heads."

Hi, Fill in Phil 'at' it

Hi, Fill in Phil 'at' it again and of course only half the story - as most know, well those that can read - those that can't will listen to FiP - that the GST is part of a package.
Tax is tax is..... nothing is for nothing!

The fact that the last

The fact that the last Labour Government plan NZ had put the country into a recession a whole year before the world econmy melted down, and the fact that australia never actually went into recession, of course had nothing to do with it.

Phills ideas run the risk of turning our "fragile recovery" back into a recession, Pity we don't have any party with the Balls for a radical rethink to make NZ the place to do bsiness, given that it's business who will create jobs, not governments.

Lowering Corportae rates is vital, having top tax rates above corportae rates promotes fraud, or at least trusts to protect money from tax, neither of which grow the economy. GST is a lot less harmfull to economic growth, but burdens low and middle income NZ, so tax reform on income and levy's like ACC fuel taxes and rates, needs to be considered when making these changes, to their credit National is at least looking at a total package.

The best thing that could be done would be to look at the number of hours that companies spend of governance issues (keeping to all the rules) and looking at how to simplfy all of these. Tax must be the same, look at a simple, low, and fair tax system, and half the compliance could be removed, this time could then be spent on growing the business, and making money & Jobs.

I challange Phil, and any of his Union mates to take a month of work, and come and work with me, and see how hard it is for small business to create jobs due the paperwork he created for me while in government, infact I make the same challange to national. Make my life easier, and I'll have the time i need to create some new jobs, and skilled tradespeople.
